Located in a quiet environment with a wild nature (natural reserve), Quinta da Murteira is a property isolated in the hills, hidden at the end of a sandpath of about 1,5 km, but nevertheless at only 1/4h's drive to the town of Tavira, its lagoon, its bird reserve and its beautiful beaches. You will be able to enjoy a very nice weather, birds watching, nice walks, beautiful starry skies or simply relax by the pool (for resident's exclusive use). Situated at 30 km from Faro airport, Quinta da Murteira, being situated centrally in the Sotavento (Leeward) Algarvio (Eastern part of the Algarve) could be the departing point for a day at the beach or to discover the South of Portugal or even the close Andalusia (Spain is only 40 km away and you will only have to drive 180 km to reach Seville). If you play golf, you will find many golf courses in the area.

Murteira (literally "place planted with myrtle") is a place known since "always" by the inhabitants of the region. A century ago, there was a farm here that exploited the 3.5 hectare of the estate bordered by two streams, at the edge of which we can still find traces of an orchard (vines, quince trees, arbutus, orange trees) and old wells. The whole property is planted with olive trees, cork oaks, fig, almond, carob trees ... The death of the farmers in the 60s corresponded to the disappearance of the exploitation ...

In 2003 Murteira was a land in the hills with the ruins of a farm and its outbuildings, all overgrown with brambles. No water, no electricity, the only acces way being by a mule track.

In the meantime, the entire area was declared a "natural reserve" with a building ban. The only exception was to renovate existing and registered ruins. It was a chance.

Anne and Georges, at the origin of the project, decide to embark on the adventure and transform this place, which has been abandoned for several decades.

It took years to get the necessary permits, clear the land, widen the roads, bring electricity, drill for water and then build the houses.

And finally in 2007 the first guests arrived. Throughout these years, all have been seduced by this rare nature, this absolute tranquility far from the tourist bustle.

In 2019, Naoko, my wife of japanese origin and myself, Benoit a belgian, took over the management of Quinta da Murteira which we have known for years.

Conscious of living in a very special environment, where our goal is to listen to nature, we seek to establish a balance between our human footprint and the life of these hills.

We wish to be able to share, with each of our visitors, this feeling of peace and harmony with the natural environment of Murteira.

If you are looking for a "refuge" where you can rest and relax, a place "in the middle of nowhere" but close to everything ... then "Quinta da Murteira" may be there for you ...
